After graduating from Penn State University in 1994 with a Turfgrass Science degree, I quickly came to the realization that there were very few career options in the Turfgrass Science field that truly intrigued me. Most of my classmates went directly into Golf Course Maintenance. Though I could see it was extremely challenging, I also saw that it really wasn’t the type of career I was looking for.

When I noticed that so many people in the home lawn care field were woefully uneducated in the science behind proper turfgrass management, I saw that there was a niche to be filled. I joined with a partner to form Teed & Brown, Inc. in 1995. We quickly began picking up discriminating clients in Fairfield County, CT. People were tired of the double talk and poor service from some of the other companies and were glad to be working with someone who cared.

As Teed & Brown continues to thrive, I have been afforded the luxury of time to pursue my passion for writing and teaching. In 2006 “The Lawn Coach” was born as an answer to those boring, purely factual columns that only an avid gardener could slog through.

As friends, friends of friends, and friends’ second cousins by marriage began to steadily ask me to stop by their lawn to tell them what was wrong, I realized that there was a need for an unbiased, interactive resource on the true best practices for home lawns. And now, “The Lawn Coach” website is born!
